Primary Purpose:  The role and function of the Student Advisor are to assist students and families in accessing services and resources that promote academic engagement, college readiness, and facilitate wellness and mental health services.

Qualifications:

Education Requirements:

 

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in behavioral sciences, social sciences, humanities, or a related field is required.  Bachelors’ degree in social work preferred.

                                                                                                                                                                 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

 

Experience in school social work with middle or high school students providing educational preferred, or providing social services at juvenile probation, child protective services, or health and human services

 

Knowledge of school social work direct and indirect services, case management, needs assessment, intervention supports, and records management

 

Knowledge of child and adolescent development, social and emotional learning, and family systems

 

Knowledge of and experience working with others in a culturally diverse academic setting

 

Knowledge of school-based/intervention procedures, student appraisal and post-secondary transition planning (workforce, vocational, college and career readiness, or military)

 

Knowledge of positive behavior supports that improve student engagement in the classroom

 

Knowledge of mental illness and emotional components of physical illness, of casework principles, methods, techniques, and practice of social work

 

                Knowledge of dropout and prevention, developmental assets, and the eight dimensions of wellness

Knowledge and experience with basic computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office, with an emphasis on Excel

Work Schedule Requirements:

Be on call 24 hours a day for students

                Be able to work nights and weekends as necessary, in addition to a normal assigned schedule, in order to do student home visits and complete the necessary job requirements.

Functions & Responsibilities:

Case Management:

  1. Manage a caseload of students.
  2. Assist with student recruitment and meet enrollment targets for the campus.
  3. Ensure caseload meets expected daily attendance targets for the campus.
  4. Ensure student dropout recovery targets are met.
  5. Ensure that all student documentation is completed.
  6. Coordinate student and parent involvement.

 

College and Career Readiness and Transition:

  1. Facilitate completion of college and career interest inventories.
  2. Facilitate college and career application process.
  3. Facilitate college and career financial aid and scholarship applications.
  4. Advise students regarding graduation and transitions.
  5. Enter data and monitor student progress on Student Management System.

 

School-Wide Performance:

  1. Ensure campus achieves student recruitment and enrollment goals.
  2. Ensure campus achieves student punctuality and attendance goals.
  3. Facilitate campus activities and events.

 

Social, Emotional, and Wellness:

  1. Completes health services activities and referrals, including vision, immunizations, and dental screenings.
  2. Responds to identified social services needs and referrals including clothing, food, transportation, housing, and related community services.
  3. Provides positive behavior supports including establishing positive relationships with students and families, promoting schoolwide student activities, enhancing study habits, promoting prosocial school behavior, providing timely student advising, and addressing behavior referrals.

Other Duties:

  1. Identify reasons why assigned students are not successful in school or exhibit undesirable behavior.
  2. Work with families and students in alleviating adverse conditions to promote resiliency and academic success for at-risk students.
  3. Assist parents in utilizing school and community resources to maximize their student’s educational abilities.
  4. Involve parents in the school to create positive academic and social outcomes for students.
  5. Listen to and respect the feelings and sensitivities of students and parents of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  6. Help students overcome the social and emotional problems interfering with adjustment and achievement in school.
  7. Provide/coordinate special education-related services for students with physical, mental, social, emotional and other educational disabilities.
  8. Increase educational attainment and enhance the educational experience for students and their families by assuring equal opportunity.

This position requires meeting or exceeding specific student attendance, college and career, and wellness performance goals.  Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Personal computer, printer, calculator, copier, fax machine, and audio / visual equipment.
